One of the most pleasurable aspects of founding the SFAA has been the direct contact I have with so many talented local artists. As some of you know, my modest but quickly growing visual art collection is entirely comprised of South Florida artists.  While I appreciate many national and international artists, it’s important to me that I support the efforts of the individuals in my own backyard.

One of my most recent acquisitions was a small piece from Steven Sylvester’s recent Dress series. Steven has a knack and a passion for clay as a medium. While I’ve only known Steven for a short time; I’ve seen his works range from clay vessels to mixed media incorporating clay with materials such as wine bottles and various fabrics. Most recently, he has been working on a new architectural installation scheduled to be a permanent installation at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale.

Not only is Steven’s style unique, he also serves as an excellent example of an artist entrepreneur. He has developed a number of set goals regarding his work, one of which was to show his dress series in a museum setting. In June, Steven achieved that goal, with an opening at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. To learn more about Steven and his work, please visit his website at http://www.stevensylvester.net
